NJSBA’s Legal & Labor Relations Services Department has posted the 2016 edition of Frequently Asked Questions about Non-Renewals and Reductions-in-Force. The document reflects current statute, regulations and court decisions. It answers 35 questions, ranging from “Each year, what action must a board take with respect to the contracts of its non-tenured teaching staff?” to “What standards govern reductions-in-force of teaching staff members?”
Each year, by May 15, a board of education must provide each non-tenured teaching staff member either with an offer of employment for the next school year, or with a notice of non-renewal.
The FAQ provides school boards with critical information on the renewal and non-renewal process for certificated and non-instructional staff, as well as legal requirements related to the elimination of staff positions.
