At its March 4, 2026 meeting, the State Board of Education held discussion on several topics.
Kailynn DuRose, the student representative to the State Board, provided a report on New Jersey’s new adaptive assessments and offered details on several of the challenges students are facing during the adoption period. Commissioner Laux highlighted a new adaptive assessments page on the New Jersey Department of Education’s website that contains resources and answers to frequently asked questions regarding the new testing format.
The State Board then adopted a resolution in Recognition of the Month of the Military Child in New Jersey, to be recognized in April 2026. The State Board also adopted a resolution recognizing March 2026 as Gifted and Talented Students Month in New Jersey.
The State Board approved five districts for certification pursuant to NJQSAC guidelines.
Finally, NJDOE personnel presented a resolution listing the proposed religious holidays for the 2026-2027 school year. No new holidays were added to the 2026-2027 calendar. Districts are required to excuse students for religious observance for any of the listed holidays upon written request of the parent or guardian. The State Board will accept public comment prior to voting to approve the list at its May 2026 meeting.
The State Board did not consider any new or pending regulatory proposals. Through Executive Order No. 7, issued on Jan. 23, Gov. Sherrill placed a 90-day pause on the proposal or adoption of any rules. However, the State Board is currently accepting written comments on proposed amendments at N.J.A.C. 6A:9B, State Board of Examiners and Certification, to remove the 20-year service requirement and to clarify that military science endorsement candidates must hold a current and valid certification or letter of eligibility issued by the appropriate branch of the United States military authorizing the individual to serve as a Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) instructor for that branch. Members of the public may send in written comments concerning the notice by April 18, 2026, via the Department’s Administrative Code and Statute webpage. Public testimony on the proposed amendments is scheduled to be held on April 8, 2026. Registration for public testimony will open on March 19, 2026, and close at noon on April 2, 2026.
